Traditional Chinese cheongsam was mainly asymmetrical with the buttons on the left, as the ancient Chinese people highly esteemed the left. The English loanword cheongsam comes from the Cantonese pronunciation of the Shanghainese term “long dress” (changshan 长衫). The high stand-up collar is the most traditional design of collar for the Chinese cheongsam.
