A. No one should blind himself to the well-known fact.B. Heavy enquiries witness the quality of our products.C. We confirm cables exchanged as per copies(cable confirmation)herewith attached.D. I’m neutral in this argument: I don’ t care who wins. The pleasures which a movie offers to our eyes have been paid for with the loss of sight of a man whose name is hardly known outside the annals of science—Joseph Plateau, a Belgian professor, born in Brussels in 1801. He studied the mechanism of sight, beginning a series of most erous experiments at the age of 28 by staring into the sun for 25 seconds to see what the effect on his eyes would be. He was blind for nearly a month.(73) But he went on experimenting, increasing the length of time during which he looked into the sun, knowing that in the end this would cost him his sight. At the age of 42 he was completely and incurably blind: the sun had destroyed the retina(视网膜)of his eyes. But he continued to work as well as he could until he died at the age of 82. Science profited enormously from his research. He studied the so-called "inertia of the eye(视觉暂留)" which makes a picture remain on the retina for about one-sixth of a second after it has disappeared from our vision. This means that, if we see a succession of individual pictures each of which appears only for a fraction of a second, they " overlap" in our brain: and if they show consecutive phases of movement, that movement will appear to us to be continuous.I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen.(71) Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention, and especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’ s no need to do anything but receive them. Listen to what they’ re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don’ t value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of saying "I’m so sorry. " when someone is in pain. One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happening to them. Her pain became a story about themselves. ually she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening.(72) When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care. I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the handkerchiefs, until I realized that passing a person a handkerchief may be just another way to shut him down, to take them out of their experience of sadness. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them. This thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. But now I know that a loving silence often has far more power to heal than the kindest words.Do you ever automatically say "God bless you" when someone sneezes Did you ever cross your fingers when a wish Most people who do these things never think about why they do them. They just do them. But there is a reason. Both acts are meant to insure good luck.(74) They are little superstitions that have come down to us from an earlier time, when everybody believed in good and evil spirits. And even in our modern world, when men are traveling to the moon, we are still practicing some of these ancient habits in our daily lives. In ancient times, men believed that the soul lived in the head. Every time someone sneezed, he was risking the er of dislodging that soul and blowing it out the nose into the outside world. So, as insurance against a lost soul, people would say "God bless you" to be sure that God would catch the soul and return it to its rightful owner. Some people today toss a bit of salt over their left shoulder if they happen to spill any at the dinner table. This practice once had a serious purpose. In an earlier time, men believed that evil spirits always stood on their left side and good spirits on the right. So any time they spilled some of the precious stuff, they would throw a bit of it over their left shoulder to keep away the evil spirits. Since the evil spirits stood on the left, and the good spirits on the right, the right side was considered the lucky side of the body. Putting your best foot forward meant starting out on the lucky side, with your right foot first.(75) That was a guarantee of good luck at whatever you were about to do. We still speak of "putting your best foot forward" , although we don’t always start walking with the right foot.I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen.(71) Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention, and especially if it’s given from the heart.
