The blues was born on the Mississippi River Delta in the early 1900s. After the Civil War, the slaves were free but life was still not easy. They had to find new work. In the South, work camps were formed. Black people from these camps worked on farms and on building up the Mississippi River banks. During the week the people worked long and hard. They often lived alone, without their families, far from home. On the weekends, the workers got together at picnics or drinking places. Traveling black musicians with guitars entertained them. The musicians sang songs about the difficult life of the Workers. These songs were called the blues.

If you have the blues it means you feel very sad. But blues songs were not always sad. Some of them were happy and many of them were funny.

Early blues singers often had very interesting names like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Howlin Wolf. Sometimes the blues singers had song contests. Each singer sang new words or a new style of the blues song. They made up the music as they played. In this way they created new music. This is called improvisation (即兴演奏). Later, improvization became a very important part of jazz music.

Blues began in the country in the South. As blacks moved into the big cities to work, the blues went with them. There, they sang about life in the cities. W.C. Handy, a black band leader from Memphis made the blues popular all over America. In 1914 he wrote the most famous blues song of all, "The St. Louis Blues.\

It is important to remember that the women’s liberation movement is not concerned only with concrete issues. The movement is also concerned with attitudes and beliefs. One example of this concern is the issue of a woman’s identity. A woman’s identity is what she thinks of herself as a person, who she thinks she is, and what she thinks she can do. Some women do not think they are capable of doing anything important, The women’s liberation movement would like to help these women improve their view of themselves. It is a fair bet that more than half of the PCs bought this Christmas in America for less than $1 000 will have AMD rather than Intel inside. Not content with this seasonal miracle, Advanced Micro Devices is bidding to loosen Intel’s grip on the more profitable high end of the market too. It could well succeed.

For most of its existence, AMD has lived in the shadow of the deal that it did with Intel in 1982. To power its PCs, IBM had decided to buy Intel’s new x-86 chips, but wanted a second supplier to keep Intel under control. Under the terms of the agreement, Intel got the contract, but had to share its intellectual property with the smaller AMD. Intel broke the arrangement, AMD started a lawsuit, and thus began nearly a decade of bitter legal battles between the two companies.

The conflict misrepresented AMD’s business, absorbed management energy and weakened investor confidence. By selling cheap Intel clones(克隆产品), AMD staggered (蹒跚，摇晃) on, sometimes quite successfully, especially if Intel was late to market with a new product. But despite the support of computer makers complaining under Intel’s dominance, trying to get a lift on the back of an ill-tempered 8001b gorilla(大猩猩) was proving a risky form of existence.

Eventually, under a settlement in 1995, AMD gave up any rights to Intel microcode. It was confident that its home-grown k5 would give Intel’s Pentium a run for its money, while a new $1.8 billion plant in Texas would meet demand and match Intel’s manufacturing skills. It did not. Design faults put the k5 more than two years behind the Pentium, and the Austin plant lay largely idle.

The study of ecology is important for everyone who cares about our world. Air, water, and land -- we would not live without any of these. But what do we mean by land It is the earth beneath our feet, wherever we are. It is mountains and plains. It is wide fields for growing com and wheat. Or it may be an airfield or a parking lot or a highway or a whole city -- land covered with cement, asphalt, and buildings. Land is the solid part of the Earth.

Land is the soil plants grow in. That is the most important things about the land -- it is the place where green plants grow. Without green plants there would be not life on Earth. Green leaves make oxygen. All of us -- ants, elephants, people, every living creature -- must have oxygen to stay alive. We breathe in oxygen and our bodies use it. Carbon dioxide is formed in the process and we breathe it out. Leaves use carbon dioxide along with water to make food for plants. Then they give off oxygen.

This process has been going on for millions of years. It is part of the pattern of our natural life on Earth. This pattern had changed very little for millions of years before people arrived on Earth. People found ways to improve their lives by changing nature, by trying to make nature fit in with their way of life. Warm houses in winter, electric lights at night, factories to produce our food, our clothes, our gadgets(零用品) -- all this people have accomplished. And we learned to grow more food on the land than nature could grow without our help.

All this is good -- up to a point. But it has gone too far. We have produced too much and we have failed to see what this was doing to our world. We have not understood the ways in which all living things on Earth depend on one another. We ourselves have increased until the sheer numbers of people on Earth have upset the balance of nature.
