The first snow of this winter made most kids excited. But Elton was not happy. He was an outside boy. He loved swimming, boating, and riding his bike in summer. When it snowed, he was always sad. After lunch, the doorbell rang ( 门铃响 ) — it was Penelope, Elton’s next-door neighbor. “Elton, would you like to come outside and make a snowman with me?” Penelope asked. Elton wrinkled ( 皱起 ) his nose. “Yes, yes, Elton would like to go,” his mother said. She asked Elton to wear warm clothes and sent him and his unhappy face outside. Penelope and Elton made the largest snowman in the neighborhood. At dinner time, Elton came home happily, but the next morning, his unhappy face came back. Then the doorbell rang again — it was Penelope. “Elton, would you like to go snowshoeing?” asked Penelope, with two pairs of snowshoes in her hands. Elton wrinkled his nose but said, “Sure, I think so.” Elton and Penelope put on the snowshoes and went walking through the trees behind the house. At lunchtime, Elton came home without his unhappy face. In the afternoon, the doorbell rang once more — it was Penelope. “Elton, would you like to go sledding ( 乘雪橇 )?” she asked. This time Elton put on his coat quickly and went out with Penelope. Elton decided that he loved winter. “Winter could be a fantastic time of year, too,” he thought.
